Special Collections

The special collections stored at St Mary's Mill contain books written by famous authors:

  • Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) the well-known Scottish historical novelist, playwright and poet spent much of his life in the Scottish Borders.  The extensive collection of his works includes the Waverley Novels
  • James Hogg (1770-1845) A Scottish poet and novelist, he is also widely known as the Ettrick Shepherd
  • Andrew Lang (1844-1912) born in Selkirk, was a Scottish poet, novelist and literary critic. The collection includes his famous works collectively known as Andrew Lang's Fairy Books, a collection of fairy tales from around the world
  • John Buchan (1875 – 1940) A Scottish novelist, historian and Governor General of Canada.

In addition to famous authors, a collection of books belonging to Thomas Craig-Brown (1844-1922) a mill owner, local historian and Provost of Selkirk was gifted to the People of Selkirk in 1953.  The collection contains many rare items including a copy of Hippocratis coi medicorum principis which belonged to the famous African explorer Mungo Park

The special collections are stored at St Mary's Mill in Selkirk.  Items from the collections can be consulted on an appointment only basis.  Please contact the Heritage Hub for details.
