Strong Start to Season for Borders Disability Football Squad
The squad, comprising: David Smith (Gala), Nathanial Jones (Hawick), Jordan Shepherd (Hawick), Matthew Roebuck (Selkirk), Arron Gray (Peebles), Darren Thomson (Gala) and Bryn Cross (Gala) played four matches at Forester High School in Edinburgh. They secured two wins, one draw and one loss with special congratulations due to David Smith who scored five goals across the games.
The new league has been introduced by the Scottish FA as part of its commitment to developing disability football. All participating teams attended an initial classification Festival where players were rated in terms of technical ability so that players and teams could be effectively matched, creating a competitive environment for all involved. All of the games are seven aside and last for 15 minutes with up to four matches being played at each fixture. There will be 6 fixtures held across the year.
Alan Oliver, Borders Sport and Leisure Disability Development Officer said;
“The new Scottish FA Disability League is a fantastic initiative which enables all football teams across the country to compete in a National League. It is great for the Scottish Borders to be represented in this league and it shows how popular football is down here. I would like to thank the Scottish Borders Disability Sports Group for supplying the team with strips and transportation assistance . We are always looking for new players to get involved and for further information please get in touch.”
The Scottish Borders team will play its next fixture on November 5th.
Ewan Jackson, Chief Executive of Borders Sport and Leisure added: “We are committed the development of disability sport in our region for all ages. It is great to see the Disability Football squad get such a positive start to their season. We will be rooting for them over the coming months.”
