UNLOCKED: The Hidden Cell Tour

For generations, parts of Jedburgh Castle Jail have remained closed to the public. 

Now, for the first time in years, visitors will have the opportunity to step beyond locked doors and explore areas rarely seen by the public. 

Led by a costumed guide, UNLOCKED takes you deep into the hidden history of one of Scotland’s most ambitious Victorian prisons. Discover the stories of the people who lived, worked and were imprisoned within these walls, and explore spaces that have remained out of bounds to visitors for decades. 

From the notorious reputation of Jeddart Justice to the hopes of nineteenth-century prison reformers, this unique experience reveals the human stories behind the prison walls and the realities of life inside Jedburgh Castle Jail. 

This is more than a guided tour. It is a rare opportunity to uncover a side of the jail that most visitors never see. 

What to Expect 

UNLOCKED is a 60 minute guided experience that takes visitors beyond the standard visitor route and into the Male Prison Block. 

Along the way, you will discover: 

• Areas normally closed to the public
• Fascinating stories from the jail’s history 
• The lives of prisoners, governors and reformers 
• The reality of crime and punishment in Victorian Scotland 
• The hidden spaces and forgotten corners of the prison 

Led by a costumed guide, the experience combines storytelling, interpretation and exclusive access to bring Jedburgh’s hidden history to life. 

PLEASE NOTE:

The Male Prisoner Cell Block has not been fully refurbished and includes low lighting, navigating narrow stairs and uneven floors.  Visitors with mobility needs, including wheelchair users may find this tour challenging or inaccessible.
