Grounded in Time
Rooted in place shaped by time
Richard Goldsworthy presents his latest body of work in Grounded in Time, a contemplative exhibition that explores the quiet power of natural materials and the passage of time held within them.
At its centre is the Luminous series, where Goldsworthy moves towards a lighter and more restrained approach. Shifting away from the heavily charred surfaces, these works combine natural wood with softly reflective pewter, creating a quieter contrast and allowing light to play a more active role across each piece.
Alongside the sculptural work is a new series of charcoal and mud drawings made using earth samples gathered from across the Scottish Borders. These works extend his material approach into a more direct engagement with the landscape embedding traces of place within each mark. Raw yet controlled the drawings contrast with the more refined sculptural pieces while remaining closely connected through process and sensitivity to materials.
Across the exhibition there is a shared focus on letting the material lead and giving attention to small details. Shaped through process, time and careful handling the works invite a slower way of looking, encouraging us to notice what is already there.
