New Exhibition Tracings Opens at Halliwell’s House Museum in Selkirk

This summer, Halliwell’s House Museum in Selkirk is delighted to present Tracings, a captivating new group exhibition opening on Saturday 28 June from 2–4pm in the Robson Gallery. All are warmly invited to attend the launch event, meet the artists, and explore a rich collection of work that celebrates creative connection and a deep sense of place.

Tracings brings together four women artists – Ann Louise Kieran, Mary T. Johnson, Nicky Sanderson, and Sheila MacNeill whose paths first crossed during a year-long mentoring programme run by the Scottish Society of Artists in 2023. What began as a professional development initiative quickly evolved into a powerful collaborative journey, rooted in mutual support, shared reflection, and artistic dialogue.

The exhibition features an exciting array of painting, drawing, printmaking and collage. Each artist offers a unique perspective, yet all are united by a shared fascination with how landscape, memory, and experience shape identity. The work ranges from meditative reflections on rural and coastal environments to responses to domestic space and urban psychogeography. Together, they create a multi-layered visual conversation that is both personal and universally resonant.

“This exhibition is a fantastic example of how creative connections can evolve into something really special,” said Phoebe Stewart, Assistant Curator for Live Borders. “The synergy between these four artists is inspiring, and the Robson Gallery provides an intimate and welcoming space to experience their work.”

For the artists, Tracings represents more than just a display of individual practices—it’s a celebration of the journey they’ve taken together. “We’ve supported each other not just artistically, but personally,” said Sheila MacNeill. “Tracings is about connection, transformation, and shared exploration.”

Nicky Sanderson added: “This has been a deeply collaborative experience. We’ve found common ground in surprising ways, and we hope visitors to the exhibition will discover their own ‘tracings’ within our work.”

In addition to the exhibition launch, visitors will have another special opportunity to engage with the artists during a “Meet the Artists: In Conversation” event on Saturday 9 August, from 2:00 to 3:30pm, also in the Robson Gallery. This informal and engaging event is free of charge and will offer deeper insight into the artists’ processes, inspirations, and the story behind the artwork.
