Flora: A new collection of laser cut drawings inspired by wildflowers and grasses found in the Scottish Borders
This exhibition presents a collection of new work by artist Martha Ellis, exploring the wildflowers and grasses of the Scottish Borders through laser cut drawing. The artworks focus on species commonly found along field margins, riverbanks and on open hillsides – plants which are often overlooked despite their vital role in the landscape.
Rooted in close observation of local flora, each piece begins as a hand drawn study, later translated into finely cut lines of light and shadow. The laser process allows the drawings to hover between presence and absence, echoing the fragility and resilience of the plants themselves.
By isolating stems, seed heads and leaves, the exhibition invites a slower way of looking, encouraging attention to form, structure and rhythm rather than botanical classification alone. Together, the works form a quiet survey of the Borders’ flora, celebrating its understated beauty and complexity while reflecting on how contemporary tools can be used to re-engage with the natural world.
