Made by Mary Beck – Dressmaking through the Decades

Discover the story of fashion, skill, and creativity through the work of one remarkable local dressmaker. Made by Mary Beck – Dressmaking through the Decades showcases a selection of beautifully crafted garments made by Mary Beck over the past 50 years, which chart changes in style, fabric and fashion from the 1970s until the present day.

From elegant evening gowns and wedding dresses to tailored suits and childrenswear, the exhibition reveals how dressmaking reflects social change, personal taste, and the traditions of skilled handcraft. Each piece offers a glimpse into a life spent creating clothing that was both functional and fashionable, highlighting the artistry behind handmade outfits. Vintage hand sewing machines, dressmaking tools and fabrics are also on display, as well as examples of Mary’s cross-stitch pictures, patchwork and appliqué.

The show will evolve during the season, with three planned changeovers, meaning that there is always something new to discover. The opening display focuses on work from the 1970s and 1980s and runs until mid-May. It will then change to a Common Riding theme, featuring a Cornet’s Lass Colour Bussing dress alongside an Acting Mother’s dress and Maids of Honour outfits.

From August the final phase of the exhibition will highlight costumes which Mary has made for Hawick-based Act 1 Youth theatre group, tweed tailoring and the last wedding dress of the season.
