‘Flora’ by Martha Ellis

‘Flora’ by Martha Ellis

This exhibition presents a new body of work exploring the wildflowers and grasses of the Scottish Borders through laser cut drawing. Rooted in close observation of local flora, each piece begins as a hand drawn study, later translated into finely cut lines of light and shadow. The laser process allows the drawings to hover between presence and absence, echoing the fragility and resilience of the plants themselves.

The works focus on species commonly found along field margins, riverbanks and open hillsides; plants often overlooked despite their vital role in the landscape. By isolating stems, seed heads and leaves, the exhibition invites a slower way of looking, encouraging attention to form, structure and rhythm rather than botanical classification alone.

The precision of laser cutting contrasts with the organic irregularity of the subject matter, creating a dialogue between technology and nature. Negative space becomes as important as line, allowing the plants to emerge as both record and abstraction. Together, the works form a quiet survey of the Borders’ flora, celebrating its understated beauty and complexity while reflecting on how contemporary tools can be used to re-engage with the natural world.
