Light and Shadow: The Art of Sterland and Stockley

Julia Sterland and Jonathan Stockley have been brought together in this unique exhibition of new paintings and drawings.

Both artists tell it like it is, each with their own style, medium and practice. Julia’s paintings show grades of realism, exploring the tumble-down buildings and old architecture around us, along with portraits and still-lifes. She sees a joy in the old buildings and mills of Hawick, her adopted home.

Jonathan works in charcoal, creating detailed monochrome studies which offer beauty in cracked brickwork and peeling paint as well as the organic decay of the natural environment. His work itself is a contrast in both light and shadow, sometimes dark, almost bleak, but with a wryly observed focus on his subject.

Two very different artists working with different mediums and to different scales- both reflecting and exploring light and shadow.
