Made by Mary Beck – Dressmaking through the Decades
Discover the story of fashion, skill, and creativity through the work of one remarkable dressmaker. Made by Mary Beck – Dressmaking through the Decades showcases a carefully selected collection of beautifully crafted garments by Mary Beck, tracing changes in style, fabric, and everyday fashion across the decades.
From elegant silhouettes to practical everyday wear, the exhibition reveals how dressmaking reflects social change, personal taste, and the enduring traditions of skilled handcraft.
Each piece offers a glimpse into a lifetime of making clothes that were both functional and fashionable, celebrating the artistry and care behind handmade dress.
The exhibition will evolve throughout the season, with three planned changeovers—meaning there’s always something new to discover and at least three reasons to return. The opening display focuses on work from the 1970s and 1980s and runs until mid-May. It will then transition to a Common Riding theme, featuring a Cornet’s Lass Colour Bussing dress alongside Acting Mothers’ dresses and Maids of Honour outfits.
From August, the final phase of the exhibition will highlight stage costumes, tweed tailoring, and the concluding wedding dress of the season.
This exhibition celebrates local heritage, creativity, and the lasting value of traditional dressmaking skills.
Free exhibition – donations accepted.
