The Annual Open Exhibition – Hawick Art Club

In an age of ever-accelerating technology and digital experiences, there is something wonderfully refreshing about stepping into a gallery and experiencing original works of art in person.

This autumn, Hawick Art Club invites you to do just that at its Annual Exhibition, celebrating the creativity, talent and enduring appeal of fine art in the heart of Hawick.

With a history stretching back almost a century, Hawick Art Club is looking ahead to its Centenary in 2028. This year’s exhibition brings together an exciting mix of artists, offering visitors the opportunity to discover both emerging talent and familiar favourites. Younger artists including Alistair Robson and Emma Jolly will exhibit alongside the work of the well-established and much-loved Sandy Jarvis, creating a vibrant and varied exhibition with something to appeal to every art lover.

The exhibition takes place in the Scott Gallery, a venue intrinsically linked with the story and traditions of Hawick Art Club. Alongside works by Club members and visiting artists, visitors will have the rare opportunity to see Portrait of a Girl, an oil on canvas by renowned Scottish artist Francis Campbell Boileau “Bunty” Cadell RSA RSW (1883–1937).

Cadell’s work forms part of the permanent fine art collection closely associated with Hawick Art Club, providing a fascinating connection between the Club’s past and its artistic present. Indeed, the Club’s earliest members would have been working in the same era as Cadell.

One of Scotland’s celebrated four Scottish Colourists, alongside Samuel John Peploe, George Leslie Hunter and John Duncan Fergusson, Cadell is renowned for his distinctive use of colour, elegant draughtsmanship and sophisticated style. Timothy Clifford, Director of the National Galleries of Scotland, described Cadell in 1988 as “one of the most dashing of Scottish Colourists” and “a virtuoso draughtsman wickedly clever with his paint brush.”
