Good Boost Innovative Technology and Legacy Funding Transforms Live Borders Pools into Therapeutic Spaces supporting Musculoskeletal Health

Thanks to a generous legacy, residents in the Borders affected by mobility and musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions will now benefit from Good Boost and Bump Boost, a technology-led initiative that will transform Live Borders pools into therapeutic spaces offering members, NHS referred clients, and pregnant women access to exercise programmes through waterproof tablets.

Good Boost uses artificial intelligence to deliver personalised, low-impact exercise programmes ideal for people with arthritis, chronic pain, and mobility issues. These aquatic sessions are adapted to the needs and ability of the user and designed to be easy to follow. Bump Boost supports musculoskeletal issues during pregnancy with the gentle aqua-based exercise helping relieve discomfort and encouraging safe movement in the latter stages of pregnancy. Group sessions foster peer-to-peer support through sharing of experiences in a fun social environment helping develop friendships and reducing social isolation.

The legacy donated, by an individual to Live Borders, will make a lasting impact on community health and wellbeing and has assisted with the initial set-up of the Good Boost initiative through purchase of waterproof tablets and specialised training for staff at Galashiels and Kelso Swimming Pools. Good Boost and Bump Boost sessions will run in eight-week blocks.

Scott Weir, Head of Commercial at Live Borders, said:

“We are incredibly grateful for this generous legacy funding, which has made this initiative possible. It will have a lasting impact on wellbeing supporting our vision to create healthier, happier, and stronger communities. Utilising Live Borders pools and partnering with Good Boost to bring this innovative, evidence-based programme to local communities means we can deliver technology-assisted aquatic rehabilitation and support people managing musculoskeletal conditions in an engaging and effective way. Further investment is required to fully realise our ambition to expand this initiative to other pools, but we remain hopeful and committed to broadening the reach and positive impact of the Good Boost and Bump Boost programmes.”

Jen Knox, Health and Physical Development Officer at Live Borders, said:

“Good Boost has been developed in partnership with healthcare professionals and successfully adopted by Leisure Centres in other local authorities. With an increasing number of people seeking support with musculoskeletal and mobility issues and growing pressure on our local health service this innovative approach will support people of all ages and abilities in their health journey through water-based movement and build on the provision we already offer and help in reducing Health inequalities.”
