Mary, Queen of Scots Visitor Centre reopens on Sunday 1 March 2026
Mary, Queen of Scots Visitor Centre reopens for the new season on Sunday 1 March 2026. This historic 16th century towerhouse in the centre of Jedburgh is a rare survivor from a troubled time in Border history and one of the jewels in Jedburgh’s crown.
It has strong associations with the tragic queen, who spent a month in the town in 1566. During her stay in Jedburgh, Mary Queen of Scots made an ill-fated ride to Hermitage Castle to meet her adviser and future husband, the Earl of Bothwell, which resulted in her falling gravely ill. She would later lament ‘Would that I had died in Jedburgh’.
The displays of paintings, objects and textiles associated with Mary explore not only her life and times, but also the cult that has grown up around her story.
There is a shop and audio tour. Disabled access is to the ground floor only, with an interactive on the ground floor which shows upper floor displays. Admission is free, donations welcome.
Opening hours:
March & November: Monday – Sunday 10 am – 3 pm
April – October: Monday – Saturday 10 am – 4 pm / Sunday 10 am – 3 pm
