Siren Songs are calling you to Heart of Hawick

Miwa Nagato-Apthorp, Jenny Biddle and Maya McNeil, three powerhouse performers based in the Scottish Borders, are bringing their newest collaborative work – Siren Songs – to the Heart of Hawick this October.

Hosted by Live Borders Arts and Creativity, the trio join forces for an unforgettable evening of rich collaboration. ‘Siren Songs’ is a haunting call to the heart, for kindling the fire as we turn towards winter, and the future ahead.

The trio includes Hawick based singer-songwriter Miwa Nagato-Apthrop, who’s mix of folk tradition and multicultural understanding has cemented her as one of the most exciting new voices in Scottish folk. Earlier this year, Nagato-Apthrop opened for Eddi Reader in Kelso and enthralled the audience with her music. She has also performed at John McCusker’s Southside of The Tracks, Celtic Connections and has opened for Rachel Sermanni. She has collaborated with Alchemy Film & Arts to release new songs about Hawick’s lesser-known histories.

Jenny Biddle, Winner of the Blues & Roots Radio International Song Contest 2020, moved from Sydney, Australia to the Scottish Borders, bringing with her an extensive career in performing and songwriting. Having played over 200 gigs since 2006 and supporting the likes of Lloyd Spiegel, Jen Cloher, Tony McManus, Biddle compels the audience with a mix of feisty blues & roots grooves, ingenious cover versions with a dusting of country roots for the wandering soul.

Lauded as ahead of their time, Maya McNeil is a California born queer Scottish-American songwriter, vocalist, healing artist, and award winning filmmaker. McNeil explores the boundaries of folk song craft and healing work in their music, endeavouring for collective recovery and release from systemic corruption with reverence to nature. McNeil’s list of musical influences goes far, deep and wide, and started with Joni Mitchell’s album ‘Blue,’ as Maya’s mum would put headphones on her pregnant belly.

Jason Moyes, Head of Arts & Creativity at Live Borders said:

“Live Borders Arts and Creativity endeavours to support and showcase the talent that lives, works and feeds into the culture here in the Scottish Borders. Miwa amazed audiences when she supported Eddi Reader in Kelso earlier this year, and we are looking forward to seeing her with Jenny and Maya in the more intimate setting of Heart of Hawick.”
