TEXT–TEXTURE–TEXTILES: Celebrating 25 Years of EDGE and the Legacy of John Buchan
Peebles Museum and Gallery is delighted to announce the opening of its latest exhibition, “TEXT–TEXTURE–TEXTILES: John Buchan and 25 Years of Textile Art”, launching on Saturday, 7 June. This exciting and multifaceted exhibition marks a significant cultural milestone, honouring the 150th anniversary of the birth of author and statesman John Buchan while celebrating a quarter-century of creative excellence from EDGE Textile Artists Scotland, one of Scotland’s most dynamic and respected textile art groups.
EDGE Textile Artists Scotland takes centre stage in this exhibition, which spans both the museum’s main gallery and the adjoining Museum Room. Formed in 1999 through the merger of three pioneering Scottish textile groups, Embryo, One, 6, 7 and SETA. EDGE was established to promote technical and artistic excellence in contemporary textile practice. Drawing from diverse artistic backgrounds and united by formal training in textile art, members of EDGE have spent the past 25 years pushing the boundaries of their medium, presenting their work in high-profile exhibitions across Scotland and beyond.
The main gallery offers a rich and immersive retrospective of EDGE’s evolution. Visitors can explore a wide range of works that reflect the group’s exceptional skill, diversity of themes, and innovative approaches to design. The exhibition is a vibrant celebration of textile as a fine art form, demonstrating the group’s ability to balance craftsmanship with conceptual depth.
In the Museum Room, the exhibition takes on a different yet equally compelling dimension. Here, EDGE artists engage directly with the legacy of John Buchan, creating new works inspired by items from the John Buchan museum’s archive. The resulting pieces form a powerful dialogue between historical narrative and contemporary interpretation, allowing visitors to experience the stories, textures, and emotions of the past through a modern artistic lens. This unique fusion of heritage and creativity transforms the space into an interactive encounter with both history and art.
Jane Charlton, Chair of EDGE Textile Artists Scotland, expressed the group’s excitement about the exhibition, saying, “EDGE is proud to celebrate 25 years of pioneering textile art in this landmark exhibition and we are delighted to bring our textiles and mixed media to Peebles Museum and Gallery. In addition, linking in with The John Buchan Museum gives us the opportunity to place some of our contemporary art alongside heritage collections, allowing for a creative conversation across time in response to this iconic Scottish figure”
Phoebe Stewart, Assistant Curator at Peebles Museum and Gallery, also highlighted the significance of the event: “This exhibition is a celebration of EDGE Textile Artists Scotland creativity and the continuing relevance of John Buchan’s legacy. It’s an inspiring convergence of Scotland’s cultural past and its thriving artistic present.”
“TEXT–TEXTURE–TEXTILES” invites audiences of all ages to explore the connections between storytelling, material culture, and modern textile innovation. It is more than just a visual experience it is an exploration of the threads that link generations, a tribute to Scotland’s rich artistic heritage, and a showcase of the extraordinary talents of one of the country’s leading textile art groups.
The exhibition opens on Saturday, 7 June at Peebles Museum and Gallery. Admission is free and all are welcome to experience this dynamic and thought-provoking celebration of textile artistry.
