Para Athletics Development Day heading to the Scottish Borders

Athletes inspired by performances by the recent World Para Athletics Championships will have a chance to try the sports out for themselves in Tweedbank this month.

Scottish Borders Disability Sport Group (SBDSG) are working with a host of key partners including Live Borders, Scottish Disability Sport and Scottish Athletics to deliver a Para Athletics taster session for all individuals with a physical, learning or sensory impairment.

This session will provide the opportunity for all individuals interested in athletics the chance to experience all elements of track and field sport – running, jumping, throwing and wheelchair racing. The session will be supported by coaches who are experienced in each individual sport and will provide a relaxed and friendly environment for attendees to learn and develop new skills.

Alan Oliver, Live Borders Sports Development Officer explained: “Participants will have the opportunity to participate in various coached lead sessions under the guidance of our qualified coaches from our local clubs who have experience in this area.

“This is the ideal opportunity to gather information about our athletics pathway and the options available after the ‘come and try’ event.

“On conclusion of the day, participants will be signposted to their nearest club to continue their athletic development. This is about utilising the skills of our volunteer workforce and ensure there is an exit route available for our promising athletes.”

The taster session will be held on Saturday, October 28 (2pm-4pm) at Tweedbank Sports Complex.

In addition to the Development Day, there will also be an opportunity for all interested coaches and volunteers interested in working with athletes with a disability to attend a three hour Inclusive Athletics Workshop from 10am–1pm at Tweedbank Sports Complex.

All attendees will be invited to attend the Development Day in the afternoon, providing an opportunity to put their new skills into practice.  There will be no charge associated to this course.
To register for either of these opportunities, please contact Alan on 01750 700 110 / 0788 747 1137 or aoliver@liveborders.org.uk.
