Light and Shadow: New Works by Sterland & Stockley Illuminate Hawick Museum
Julia Sterland and Jonathan Stockley have been brought together in this unique exhibition of new paintings and drawings.
Both artists have their own style, mediums and ways of working. Julia’s paintings show grades of realism. She uses oil and watercolour to explore the architecture around us, finding joy in the old buildings and mills of Hawick, her adopted home. The exhibition also includes examples of her portraits, seascapes, flower paintings and still-lifes. Unframed original work by Julia is on sale as well as framed artworks.
Jonathan works in charcoal, creating detailed monochrome studies which offer beauty in cracked brickwork and peeling paint as well as the organic decay of the natural environment. His work is a contrast in light and shadow – sometimes dark, almost bleak, but with a wryly observed focus on his subject.
This exhibition gives the opportunity to see two very different artists working in different mediums and to different scales – both reflecting and exploring light and shadow.
Julia Strickland says:- ‘I am looking forward to exhibiting with Live Borders, especially in Hawick, which is such a creative place. I am excited about exhibiting with Jonathan and I hope this exhibition will help promote figurative painting and encourage people to paint in this way.’
Jonathan Stockley says:- ‘The Scottish Borders has always been good to me as an artist, both in appreciation and inspiration for my work. I’m very excited to be bringing these 20 little pieces of light and shadow to exhibit with Live Borders’.
