The Golden Helmet
The Golden Helmet
The near legendary Golden Helmet is now displayed in the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum. This was a special award made by Esso, the fuel sponsors of Team Lotus to commemorate the 1965 season in which Jim Clark set a record of achievement never seen before or since, winning both the Formula One World Championship and the Indianapolis 500 Miles in the same season.
The top of the helmet is engraved with a world map inlaid with precious stones, with a blue sapphire for his home at Edington Mains in Berwickshire and seven pink sapphires locating his Grand Prix victories and his win at Indianapolis.
This superb trophy had only rarely been displayed to the public. It is now on loan and forms a major part of the exhibition at the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum.
