Discover the Maths All Around Us

Maths Week Scotland gave us the chance to look at the world around us in a whole new way – and discover that mathematics is everywhere.

From the patterns in leaves and trees to the changing seasons, from counting wildlife to measuring shadows, the museum became a place to explore, investigate and uncover the maths hidden in everyday life.

Explorer Backpacks

Our Explorer Backpacks invite families and young visitors to step outside and discover the mathematics of the natural world.

Packed with fun, hands-on activities and challenges, the backpacks encourage children to explore their surroundings, spot patterns, make measurements, count, compare and investigate.

Look closely and you might discover maths in:

• The shapes, heights and patterns of trees
• Leaves, symmetry and repeating patterns
• Wildlife, counting and estimating
• Seasons and changes over time
• Shadows, length and position
• Numbers, shapes and measurements in the world around us

Museum Activity Book

Our Maths Week Scotland Activity Book brings the same sense of discovery indoors, with activities designed to encourage children and families to explore the museum and Wilton Lodge Park through a mathematical lens.

From spotting shapes and patterns to solving puzzles, counting, measuring and making observations, the activity book turns a visit to the museum into an interactive maths adventure.
