Peebles Swimming Pool Member Update

Members update – 12 July 2022

We wanted to give you the latest update on the situation at the Peebles Swimming Pool, following the fire on Sunday 19 June.

We are working closely with Scottish Borders Council, who as owners of the building, are leading the building assessment and work is well underway to assess the full extent of the damage. The Pool will remain closed for a number of weeks. It is expected to reopen but it is not yet possible to predict when that will be.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation whilst these assessments continue, and we will update you as soon as possible with a clearer indication of timelines once these are completed.

As stated in our previous emails, all membership direct debits have been adjusted or frozen to reflect the closure, therefore you do not need to do anything. Please don’t cancel your direct debit.

Please remember that if you would like to use other Live Borders Pools then please contact us at peeblesmembership@liveborders.org.uk and we will gladly assist.

We appreciate the closure impacts all of our valued customers greatly, especially the 580 children who are on our Peebles Learn to Swim programme, our clubs who use the facility to train along with those who find great physical and mental benefits from swimming.

Our staff have been busy working to assess pool availability within other Live Borders facilities, such as Galashiels and Selkirk Pools, as well as working closely with private operators in the town and surrounding area to ensure the community has the chance to continue to enjoy swimming as much as possible.

We are delighted that we have been able to move our two week crash course to Barony Castle Hotel which meant 30 children could continue to learn to swim. We have also made additional pool time available in both Galashiels and Selkirk to help accommodate swimming lessons and club usage. We are currently working with over 100 members who have registered interest in continuing their swimming lessons at alternative Live Borders locations.

We are grateful to the Barony for their help and support so far, and the children on the crash courses have been thrilled to get back into the water.

One mother said: “It was very much appreciated that the Barony Castle Hotel allowed Live Borders the use of the facility to run the Swim School. Harry loved every minute, gained so much confidence and we’ve booked in for another week.”

Discussions with Cardrona Hotel are ongoing and they may be in a position to help with some pool time but not until after the school holidays due to the hotel being currently extremely busy.

In addition to finding alternative swimming arrangements, please remember that as part of your Learn to Swim membership your child is still able to access free public swimming at our other pools – all they need to do is take their membership card along with them. CLICK HERE for timetables and details of activities available in our other facilities.

If you have any questions, or would like to continue swimming or take up lessons at a different location, please email us at peeblesmembership@liveborders.org.uk to register your interest.

We value your membership and thank you for your patience and understanding at this challenging time.

Kind regards,
Live Borders
