American art showcased in Galashiels

Working in partnership with the British Museum the exhibition, which runs from April 1 – July 2, will include works by the most celebrated American artists including Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Kara Walker and Jasper Johns.

Entitled Warhol to Walker: American prints from pop art to today, the partnership exhibition of nine well-known prints coincides with the British Museums American Dream exhibition and highlights the sheer inventiveness and technical ingenuity of the artists, reflecting America’s power and influence over the last six decades.

Many of these works also address deep divisions in society which are still prevalent today.

Assistant Curator Phoebe Stewart said: “I am thrilled to be showcasing and curating an exhibition of nine prestigious American prints from the British Museum’s print collection.

“This is an extraordinary collection of work and I hope it will inspire artistic debate and intrigue amongst our visitors to the gallery.”

Ewan Jackson, Chief Executive, Live Borders added: “We are really privileged that the British Museum is entrusting Old Gala House with the care of these works from the most celebrated American artists who were very much inspired by the world around them.”

Warhol to Walker: American prints from pop art to today is supported by the Dorset Foundation and Maria Bojanowska, Dorset Foundation Head of National Programmes at the British Museum said: “The British Museum is delighted that Old Gala House will be launching the UK tour.

“The exhibition showcases some of the greatest printmakers from the pop period in the British Museum’s collection, and continues our commitment to touring the best of our collection as widely as possible across the UK.”

The American Dream: pop to present, sponsored by Morgan Stanley and supported by the Terra Foundation for American Art, is running now until June 18 at the British Museum.
