Jedburgh Castle Jail & Museum

Jedburgh Castle Jail is one of the most unique visitor attractions in Jedburgh, Scottish Borders. Although it looks like a grand castle, inside it tells a very different story.

Built in the 1820s on the site of the original Jedburgh Castle, this historic jail offers a fascinating insight into 19th-century prison life in Scotland. Visitors can explore the original cell blocks, discover real prisoner stories and learn why some described it as “the most comfortable jail in Scotland.”

Entry to Jedburgh Castle Jail is completely free. Donations are welcome and play an important role in helping us maintain the museum and improve the visitor experience.

Discover Jedburgh’s History

The jailer’s house is home to Jedburgh’s town museum, where you can explore the history of the Royal Burgh from ancient times to the present day.

Exhibitions highlight local traditions and industries, alongside stories of notable figures including:

Jedburgh Castle Jail is easy to access, with free on-site parking available, including designated spaces for disabled visitors. The museum is also well connected by public transport, with a bus stop just a 10-minute walk away, and we are pleased to welcome coach tours.

The site offers a range of facilities to make your visit comfortable, including toilets, accessible toilets and baby changing facilities. Assistance dogs are welcome, and a hearing loop is available.

Please note that access to the museum is available on the ground floor, where interactive displays provide insight into the upper floor exhibits.

We also offer a variety of resources to enhance your visit, including foreign language guides and children’s activity guides, making the experience enjoyable for visitors of all ages.
