Internet Filtering

We apply filtering on public access PCs to prevent the display of obscene or offensive material. Filtering also helps prevent the PCs being used to access illegal materials such as child pornography and terrorism material.

The categories that are blocked for everyone are:

  • Internet Watch Foundation categories (illegal sites, child pornography, and criminally obscene or racist sites)
  • Racism and hate
  • Illegal or questionable
  • Gambling
  • Militancy and extremism
  • Sex and nudity
  • Violence

Children's access (under 16) is more heavily filtered to prevent access to inappropriate sites.

Sometimes a valid site will be blocked by the filter. If you feel this has happened please ask a member of staff for a filtering access request form. These are available in all libraries.

If a site is accessed that you think is offensive please tell library staff and we will investigate.
